From 11.12. to 20.12. the Berlin Circus Festival was live for 240h. In this media library you can access the live streams and various formats, experiments and creations - a testimony to the online edition of the Berlin Circus Festival.
Since a live event wasn't possible, we wanted to offer a creative-artistic space that reacts to the critical needs of the artists and offers the possibility to stay active and experimentally explore one's creativity.

artist in residency
The stage belonged to one artist (group) for 48 hours at a time. They were free to do whatever they wanted. It was their stage and their place to rehearse, perform, try out, explore, experience and share.
digital project
A selection of digital artistic projects in the field of contemporary circus.
Including two curated projects by artists who already have a close connection to the festival, as well as 10 projects selected from an open call that were realised by artists in 2020.

eva van boxtel & felix zech This little movie is based on our daily life throughout the first Lockdown in the Netherlands. This period gave us time and space to explore our interest in art without being on stage. For the two of us it was important to stay creative and challenge each other.

kreativkultur A 250 metre long red carpet is transformed into mobile stages in two Viennese social housing complexes.
The image of artists and residents on a piece of carpet stands as a metaphor for “physical distancing” and at the same time for a unifying action that overcomes the barriers between the participants. |
"the swifts"
anni küpper "The Swifts" is an artful juggling video created by Anni Küpper. The video combines live-action with hand-drawn animation and was shot in Portland, Oregon, in September 2020.
The Vaux Swifts are migrating birds and their largest known roosting site is in Portland. During the month of September thousands of birds spiral and swirl through the air before they seek shelter in an abandoned chimney overnight. |

sakari männistö Unum is a series of virtual, °360 circus performances experienced 'solitary', performed alone, and experienced alone.
Unum is a new way to perform and experience a performance, it is not a media or a digital art project, nor is it squeezing existing work into a new format. Gisela and Dittmar Winkler run the largest circus archive in all of Germany. In their house they have been collecting documents on traditional circus, vaudeville, new and contemporary circus for over 50 years. We invited them to talk to us about the archive, circus in the GDR and the development of the genre.

Laura Hirvi, director of the Finland Institute of Germany, and Hermman Lugan, director of the Bureau de theatre et de la danse of the Institut francais, have been close partners and supporters of the Berlin Circus Festival for a long time. The conversation with Josa and Johannes focused on art and culture in times of pandemic in Germany, Finland and France.
