"The Shedding" is about changing skin, changing life, and looking for the love of death. In a bifrontal setting, the audience faces itself, with the performer in the middle. She is in the centre: her flesh, her thoughts, her madness. What emerges is an intimate and unsettling space for an explicit exploration of the body, the spectator and the gaze that connects them. “Don’t expect the male or the female gaze, because "The Shedding" is 100% the Reine gaze.” Sceneblog.dk A contemporary circus, performance, art, theatre and dance piece, "The Shedding" questions the sexualisation of the contortionist and the romantic image of violence against women. The body bends, twists, crawls and transforms — no longer as an object to be looked at, but as a force that looks back. Claustrophobic, hypnotising and absurd, this one-woman show becomes a rebellion from within the skin. “Bold, challenging and utterly stunning.” Bristol247 Elise Bjerkelund Reine is a circus performer and performance creator based in Copenhagen. She works with experimental and political circus to push boundaries and norms, aiming to evoke and provoke emotions through performative risk. Educated in Denmark at AFUK and in France at CNAC, she has spent 23 years in the trapeze and, as a contortionist, in every conceivable position. Today, she uses her equilibrist circus language to explore topics often aimed at an adult audience. In addition to creating her own works and participating in performances, she is the founder and artistic director of Feral Festival. |
