A choreography for polystyrene and one artist.

In this remarkable piece of visual theatre, Andrea Salustri explores the possibilities of the everyday material polystyrene. As an almost unseen animator he allows the polystyrene to take the lead and drive the performance, performing its own artistry, creating magic in front of our eyes.

Materia is a captivating and unusual performance that does not seek to create a narrative or explicit metaphor. Instead, it encourages the audience to use their imagination and interpret the images presented on stage. An unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

“Objects develop a magical life of their own. You can’t escape the thrill of the never-seen-before.” - Silvia Buss, Saarbrücker Zeitung

Andrea Salustri comes from Rome, where he learned juggling, fire manipulation, and worked as a street performer. He graduated with honours in philosophy from La Sapienza University in Rome and then decided to move to Berlin to train in contemporary dance. He first attended the intensive dance programme at Tanzfabrik Berlin and then graduated in dance and choreography at the HZT University in Berlin. Andrea is an award-winning artist for circusnext 2018-2019.

the sphere

"Materia" is presented in the framework of The Sphere:

Since January 2020, Berlin Circus Festival is one of the main partners of the EU project The Sphere. It is an experimental research and creation project to develop alternative funding ecologies and to redistribute the risks and opportunities of making art. We envisage a world in which audiences co-own the artworks they love together with the artists, collectors and other stakeholders of a given project.

Materia 2.0 is the first derivative of the original Materia and will be screened after the performance at Theaterforum Kreuzberg. No additional tickets are required.

"materia 2.0 – for materia" marija baranauskaité liberman

Bild

Contemporary circus artist and concept clown Marija Baranauskaitė Liberman, who won the audience vote of the international project "The Sphere", conducted an artistic investigation: How to create a film for a non-human audience out of Styrofoam - how to create the most empathetic atmosphere for the essence and effect of Styrofoam?

In 2018 Marija created a performance for non-human audiences - sofas ("The Sofa Project"), and in 2022 the Sphere community supported and funded her idea to create a performance for Styrofoam, inspired by the original "Materia". Marija decided that the first phase of this creative process would be to create a film for Styrofoam.

This is a people-friendly film performance!

Marija Baranauskaitė Liberman is the first Lithuanian to study clown theatre at Philippe Gaulier's International Clown School in France. Before that, she studied contemporary dance at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
